Interested in volunteering for the Red Cross? Here is a list of SOME of the opportunities currently available to Red Cross youth volunteers. To become a volunteer, fill out the form under the "Youth Volunteer Application Form".

Service Opportunities

Youth Class Instructor

Youth volunteers can be trained to teach our youth classes. Youth classes
cover topics such as how to respond to and prevent choking, breathing, and fire
emergencies, Youth volunteers have been trained to be Safe Kids, Basic Aid
Training (BAT), and When I'm in Charge instructors. Safe Kids covers a variety of
small programs and courses while BAT and When I'm in Charge are 3 to 4 hour
long, intensive courses.

Community Services Volunteer

If you are interested in helping your community, you can also help out at various
service events. You will be able to represent the Red Cross at community
fairs and events where you will interact with people of all ages. These events
generally take place on weekends. If you are interested in becoming a
Community Services Volunteer, email YouthServicesSVC@redcross.org.

YDAT

Students 16 or older have the opportunity to be a part of the adult Disaster
Action Team (DAT) that responds to local disasters. DAT responds to disasters
in the community to ensure that individuals affected by the disaster are properly
taken care of. To find out about becoming a YDAT member or to find out more

Leadership Opportunities

Red Cross clubs

Red Cross Clubs are officially recognized clubs on school campuses led by
middle, high school and college students who wish to serve their community as
volunteers of the American Red Cross.
Students in clubs plan events, organize fundraisers for a variety of initiatives,
hold blood drives, promote classes, and much more!
All 25 of our clubs in Santa Clara County were started by youth just like you!

Youth Committees

Would you like to be more involved with the American Red Cross? Then join
a committee! Youth volunteers will attend committee meetings, help plan and
organize events, and interact with other Red Cross members. Find out more

Youth Executive Board

The Youth Executive Board (commonly called E-board) consists of high school
students from around the county who plan projects and implement programs that
serve the needs of the community through service, education, and leadership.

All Kids Ready – Disaster Preparedness

This is an interactive 45 minute course that teaches students in grades 2-6
what to do in case of a disaster. Topics include personal and family disaster
preparedness and how to build a family disaster kit.
Cost: Free

All Kids Ready – First Aid

In this 45 minute to 1 hour course, students in grades 2-6 will learn how
to prevent injuries and to perform basic first aid skills. This course fun and
interactive course can be altered according to group needs.
Cost: Free with demo or $10 per student with skill

Basic Aid Training

This lively 4 hour course teaches children in grades 3-6 skills in basic First Aid for
nosebleeds, bites, bruises, burns, choking, fractures and personal safety skills
that include how to control bleeding and how to respond to and prevent choking
or breathing emergencies.
This is a fun and interactive course that involves games, group activities, hands-
on manikin practice, and relay races.
*Meets requirements for Webelo Ready Man badge
Cost: $25

Babysitter’s Training

In this 6.5-hour course for ages 11 to 15, students learn how to interview for a
babysitting job, make responsible decisions, supervise children, and keep kids
and themselves safe. Skills taught include: rescue breathing, first aid for choking,
first aid for bleeding, and basic care (diapering, holding, feeding) for infants and
small children. Students must be at least 11 years old and must successfully
complete the training course to receive Red Cross certification. Remember to
bring a sack lunch.
Cost: $70

When I’m in Charge

In this 3 hour course designed for children ages 8-11, students learn to be more
aware of the potential dangers they could face when left home alone.
The course teaches responsibility for personal safety as well as the safety of
younger siblings. Topics include: keeping your house key safe, door safety,
dealing with fires and gas leaks, phone and internet safety, how to get help, and
other safety related topics. Parents are invited to attend the last 30 minutes of
class for the family communication plan discussion.
Cost: $25

Scrubby Bear

This is an interactive 20-30 minute program designed as a puppet show and sing
along for preschoolers to learn the importance of hand washing and personal
hygiene to stop the spread of germs and diseases.
Cost: Free

Tommy the Safety Cat

In this 30-45 minute fun and interactive course, preschoolers and students in
grade 1 learn about safety tips in everyday life, such as how to avoid getting lost
at the mall or being careful around animals. This course includes story telling and
group activities.
Cost: Free
