Community Outreach
The Community Outreach Committee is looking for students to use their bilingual skills to teach others the value of preparedness in the time of a disaster. This includes public speaking, PowerPoint presentations, attending health fairs, bimonthly committee meetings, and participating in other Red Cross events. This committee focuses on helping people whose first language is not English; we encourage bilingual students to join, but all are welcome! 

Meeting time: First and third Saturday of every month, 10-11 AM, at the Silicon Valley Chapter

Disaster

The Disaster Committee is dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public about how to prepare and respond to natural disasters, such as fires, earthquakes and floods. It organizes events like the Disaster Simulation and works with other committees for events such as Kits for Kids. 

Meeting time: First and third Tuesday of every month, 7 PM, at Beija Flora Coffeehouse in Cupertino

International

The International Committee raises awareness about worldwide events, fundraises for international causes, and helps immigrants and refugees adapt to their lives in the United States. The committee organizes events such as the Refugee Stimulation and Refugee Soccer Tournament and also teaches ESL (English Second Language) to immigrants. Through this committee, members gain organizational skills, leadership experience, and most importantly, insight about the world.

Spirit
The Spirit Committee is a group designed for motivated and creative Red Cross volunteers who are willing to contribute more fun and enthusiasm to the chapter hosted Red Cross activities. The group is in charge of planning several jolly, memorable volunteer socials throughout the school year for all of our Red Cross youth volunteers. It is also in charge of fundraising for and setting up our annual Youth Awards Night in May where we recognize volunteers who contributed a lot and/or were active volunteers at the Red Cross activities.

Safe Kids 

SafeKids is a committee designed to teach preschoolers, kindergarteners, and elementary school students about basic first aid, disaster preparedness, and safety. By joining the committee, your responsibilities are to schedule classes in your area and to teach some of these classes. As a member of this committee your primary job is to teach, so get trained soon!

SafeKids classes include:
·       Tommy the Safety Cat
In this 30-45 minute fun and interactive course, preschoolers and students in grade 1 learn about safety tips in everyday life, such as how to dial 911, fire safety, basic first aid, how to avoid getting lost at the mall, and being careful around animals. This course includes storytelling and group activities.
Cost: free
·       All Kids Ready
In this 45 minute to 1 hour course, students in grades 2-6 will learn how to prevent injuries and to perform basic first aid skills. This fun and interactive course can be altered according to group needs.
Cost: free for demo only or $10 per student with skill
·       When I’m In Charge
In this 3 hour course designed for children ages 8-11, students learn to be more aware of the potential dangers they could face when left home alone. The course teaches responsibility for personal safety as well as the safety of younger siblings. Topics include: keeping your house key safe, door safety, dealing with fires and gas leaks, phone and internet safety, how to get help, and other safety related topics.
Cost: $25
·       Scrubby Bear
This is an interactive 20-30 minute program designed for preschoolers to learn the importance of hand washing and personal hygiene to stop the spread of germs and diseases.

Basic Aid Training (BAT) Instructor Training
BAT Instructor Training takes place at the beginning of each semester. Once this training is completed, youth volunteers can teach at our BAT classes for community service. Once youth completed teaching three BAT classes, they can receive the additional training hours. BAT classes cover topics, such as how to respond to and prevent choking, breathing, and fire emergencies. Youth volunteers who have been trained to be BAT instructors get the chance to teach one or more 1 hour and 30 minutes sessions of a class. YDAT (Youth Disaster Action Team)
Students 16 or older have the opportunity to be a part of the adult Disaster Action Team (DAT) that responds to local disasters. DAT responds to disasters in the community to ensure that individuals affected by the disaster are properly taken care of.
